Armour stone & flagstone
Armour stone retaining walls and steps, flagstone walkways and patios for homes and cottages.
What we do
Armour stone is big, natural stone set in place by machine. It holds back a slope, makes steps that last, and looks at home in cottage country. Flagstone fills in the walkways, landings and patios between.
On one job a rotting timber retaining wall was close to giving way: we took it out and replaced it with 20" armour stone.

Timber Retaining Wall Replacement with Durable Armour Stone
A deteriorating timber retaining wall posed a risk of collapse and soil erosion. To enhance longevity and structural resilience, the old wall was removed and replaced with robust 20" armour stone. This upgrade not only reinforced the landscape but also added aesthetic appeal and long-term durability.
What customers say
We hired Matt to build an armour stone retaining wall as our old timber based retaining wall had collapsed due to lack of proper drainage. Matt was very professional and priced well below all the other estimates we received. He implemented proper draining, compaction, cut each stone to fit like a glove where needed. And he did all this in less than 3 days and for less than it would cost me to do it myself. I'm very happy with SMG Excavating. I highly recommend Matt and will definitely use him for future projects. 10/10, can't recommend enough!
We had our wood retaining walls for the walkout dugout and replaced with rock walls by SMG Excavating. We had 5 companies come in and give us a quote. We decided on SMG because we felt Matt was on the exact same page as us on what we wanted. Matt was easy to deal with, trust me I asked a LOT of questions. He answered all of them without issue. The end result was exactly what we were after. What was impressive was the care given to how every rock was placed/cut to fit with the next one. Scott is amazing at this. The patio and walkway look amazing. The before and after is incredible. We have no hesitation recommending Matt and Scott. It also helps that these 2 are just down to earth decent guys who want to do the best job they can. In the end every bit was cleaned up, re-graded and well seeded. Cant say enough about how happy we are with the work they did. Amazing guys keep up the good work and attitudes and just know it was greatly appreciated.
We are absolutely thrilled with work Matt and Scott did on our rock walls using the existing stones from our property! They are meticulous, creative and extremely hard working. The end results are far beyond our highest expectations. We would not hesitate to recommend them to our friends and neighbors (actually we already have! LOL) Will definitely use them for future projects!
